Waist Circumference

Waist circumference is a simple anthropometric measure of abdominal size that helps describe body composition and estimate health risk at the population and individual levels. It is typically measured with a flexible tape around the abdomen at a standardized anatomical site, then analyzed alongside variables such as age, sex, body mass index, and disease outcomes. In statistics, waist circumference supports descriptive summaries, group comparisons, correlation and regression analyses, and risk classification. Researchers use these data to study patterns of central adiposity, evaluate associations with cardiometabolic conditions, and assess how measurement thresholds perform across populations.

Source: Joseph Donroe, MD, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT While its usefulness in cancer screening is debated, the male rectal examination remains an important part of the physical exam. The exam is indicated in selected patients with lower urinary tract symptoms, urinary and/or fecal incontinence or retention, back pain, anorectal symptoms, abdominal complaints, trauma patients, unexplained anemia, weight loss, or bone pain. There are no absolute...

Large laser-interferometers are being constructed to create a new type of astronomy based on gravitational waves. Their sensitivities, as for many other high-precision experiments, are approaching fundamental noise limits such as the atomic vibration of their components. We are pioneering technologies to overcome these limits using novel laser beam shapes.

Source: Smaa Koraym at Johns Hopkins University, MD, USA Measuring Diameter and CircumferenceExpand Error can be introduced in any experiment, even when the technique is performed carefully and correctly. It is essential to critically examine your experimental methods when performing any lab exercise in order to understand and evaluate uncertainty. In this part of the lab, you'll determine a procedure for measuring the circumference of different glassware and then assess sources of error in...

Oscillation and Reaction Board Techniques for Estimating Inertial Properties of a Below-knee Prosthesis

2014

Body segmental inertial properties are required for inverse dynamics modeling. Using an oscillation and reaction board technique, inertial properties of below-knee prostheses were measured. Using direct measures of prosthesis inertia in the inverse dynamics model of the prosthetic leg resulted in lower magnitudes of resultant joint forces and moments.
