Functional Groups

Fonksiyonel gruplar, bir molekülün özelliklerini etkileyen kovalent bağlı atom setleridir. Aynı fonksiyonel grupları içeren moleküller genellikle benzer özellikler gösterir ve benzer reaksiyonlara uğrar. Fonksiyonel grupların adlandırılması, organik kimya ve biyokimyada yararlı olan bir moleküldeki atomların hızlı bir şekilde tanımlanmasını sağlar.Hidrokarbonlar organik moleküllerin temelidir ve değişen sayıda karbon ve hidrojen atomu içerir. Bunlara alkanlar, alkenler ve alkinler dahildir. Alkanlardaki karbon atomları tekli bağlarla birbirine bağlanırken alkenler ve alkinler sırasıyla çift veya üçlü bağlar içerir.Hidrokarbonlar kapalı halkalar oluşturabilir. Halka yalnızca tek bağlar içeriyorsa, buna sikloalkan denir. Karbonlar, tek ve çift bağlar dönüşümlü olarak birbirine bağlanırsa, buna aromatik halka veya aril grubu denir.Karbon içermeyen en basit gruplardan biri, bir oksijen atomu ve bir hidrojen atomu içeren hidroksil grubudur. Esterler, bir R grubu ve bir oksijen ile çevrili bir karbonil grubundan oluşurken, karboksilik asitler veya karboksil grupları, bir R grubu ve bir alkol ile çevrelenmiştir. Fonksiyonel gruplar, bir molekülün karbon iskeletine bağlandığında, bu molekülün özelliklerini değiştiren karakteristik özelliklere sahip bir atom grubudur. Örneğin, bir molekül üzerinde belirli fonksiyonel grupların varlığı onları hidrofilik hale getirirken, diğerleri onları hidrofobik hale getirecektir. Bu fonksiyonel gruplar organik kimyanın vazgeçilmez bir parçasıdır ve karbonhidratlar, proteinler, lipitler ve nükleik asitler gibi biyolojik moleküllerin önemli bileşenleridir.  Hidrokarbonlar 
 Karbon atomları arasındaki güçlü ve kararlı bağlar, zincirleri, dalları ve halkaları içeren karmaşık moleküller üretir. Bu bileşiklerin kimyasına organik kimya denir. Hidrokarbonlar sadece karbon ve hidrojenden oluşan organik bileşiklerdir. Alkanlar doymuş hidrokarbonlardır-yani sadece tek bağlar içeren hidrokarbonlardır. Alkenler bir veya daha fazla karbon-karbon çift bağı içerirler. Alkinler bir veya daha fazla karbon-karbon üçlü bağı içerirler. Aromatik hidrokarbonlar halka yapıları içerirler. Aril grupları olarak da bilinirler.
 
 Alkoller ve Eterler 
 Hidrokarbon olmayan birçok organik bileşik, hidrokarbon türevleri olarak düşünülebilir. Bir hidrokarbon türevi, bir hidrokarbonun bir veya daha fazla hidrojen atomunun, karbon veya hidrojen dışındaki bir elementin en az bir atomunu içeren fonksiyonel bir grupla değiştirilmesiyle oluşturulabilir.  Karbonil grubu ile ilgili fonksiyonel gruplar arasında bir aldehitin &#8211CHO grubu, bir ketonun &#8211COO grubu, bir karboksilik asidin&#8211 COOH grubu ve bir esterin &#8211COOR grubu bulunur. Bir karbon&#8211oksijen çift bağı olan karbonil grubu, bu organik molekül sınıflarındaki anahtar yapıdır: Aldehitler, karbonil karbon atomuna bağlı en az bir hidrojen atomu içerirler.  Aminler

Functional groups are the parts of organic molecules that give them specific chemical behavior. They help determine how a compound reacts and what properties it has. In organic chemistry, these groups are used to classify molecules in a clear way.

Hydrocarbons are one common class of organic compounds. They contain only carbon and hydrogen. Alcohols, aldehydes, and ketones are other classes that are identified by their functional groups. These groups make each class behave differently from the others.

Knowing functional groups helps students recognize related compounds and compare their structures. It also provides a simple way to organize many organic molecules into meaningful groups. That makes functional groups an important part of high school chemistry.
