Polimer, kovalent bağlarla bir arada tutulan, monomer adı verilen küçük moleküllerden oluşan bir zincirdir. Organizmalar biyolojik polimerleri sentezleyebilir veya bilim adamları laboratuvarda polimerleri sentezleyebilir. Doğal polimerler, tüm canlı organizmalarda bulunan genetik materyal olan DNA ve yaşamın yapı taşları olan proteinler, polisakkaritler ve lipitleri içerir.Plastikler en yaygın sentetik polimerlerden bazılarıdır ve naylon, polietilen ve teflon içerir.  Ek Polimerizasyon
 
 Reaksiyona katılan monomerler çift bağlara sahip olduğunda ek polimerizasyon meydana gelir. Bu reaksiyon, reaksiyonu başlatmak için eşlenmemiş bir değerlik elektronuna sahip harici bir molekülün varlığını gerektirir. Bu eşleştirilmemiş elektron oldukça reaktiftir ve bir monomerdeki çift bağlardan biriyle bir bağ oluşturur, bu da monomerin eşleştirilmemiş bir değerlik elektronuna sahip olmasına yol açar.
