Question 1

What is osmosis and how does it differ from diffusion?

Accepted Answer

Osmosis is the movement of water across a semipermeable membrane from lower to higher solute concentration. Unlike diffusion, which moves dissolved solutes across permeable membranes, osmosis specifically involves water movement when a membrane blocks solute passage. Both are passive transport processes requiring no cellular energy.

Question 2

What role do aquaporins play in osmosis?

Accepted Answer

Aquaporins are small channel proteins that facilitate rapid water movement across cell membranes during osmosis. These proteins significantly accelerate water transport compared to passive diffusion alone, allowing cells to quickly respond to osmotic gradients and maintain water balance efficiently. Aquaporins enable cells to adapt rapidly to osmotic changes.

Question 3

How does osmolarity determine the direction of water movement?

Accepted Answer

Osmolarity measures the total dissolved particles in a solution. Water moves from regions of low osmolarity, where water concentration is relatively high, to regions of high osmolarity, where solute concentration is higher. This continues until osmotic equilibrium is reached on both sides of the membrane.

Question 4

What is osmotic pressure and why is it important?

Accepted Answer

Osmotic pressure is the minimum pressure required to prevent net water movement across a semipermeable membrane. It reflects the strength of the osmotic gradient created by solute concentration differences. Understanding osmotic pressure is essential for predicting how cells respond to changes in their surrounding environment.

Question 5

Why is water balance critical for living organisms?

Accepted Answer

Water comprises 60 to 95 percent of living organism weight and serves as the primary solvent for cellular processes. Maintaining appropriate water balance through osmosis prevents cells from expanding or shrinking dangerously, ensuring proper cellular function and organism survival and health.

Question 6

What happens when osmotic balance is disrupted in cells?

Accepted Answer

When osmotic balance is disrupted, cells may expand or shrink depending on whether water moves in or out. This osmotic imbalance can damage cellular structures and impair function, making the regulation of solute concentration across the membrane essential for cell survival.

Question 7

How does a concentration gradient establish across a semipermeable membrane?

Accepted Answer

A concentration gradient forms when dissolved solutes cannot cross a semipermeable membrane, creating different solute concentrations on each side. This separation of solutes establishes an osmotic gradient that drives water movement until the osmolarity becomes approximately equal on both sides of the membrane.
