Q1: What are unit vectors in the Cartesian coordinate system?
Unit vectors are vectors with magnitude one that point along the coordinate axes. In Cartesian systems, î, ĵ, and k̂ represent unit vectors along the positive x, y, and z axes respectively. They serve as directional references for expressing vector components and allow any vector to be written as the sum of its scaled components along each axis.
Q2: How do you find the magnitude of a vector from its components?
The magnitude of a vector is calculated using the square root of the sum of the squares of its scalar components. For a vector with components Vx, Vy, and Vz, the magnitude equals √(Vx² + Vy² + Vz²). This relationship applies whether the vector exists in two or three dimensions.
Q3: What is the relationship between vector components and orthogonal projections?
Vector components are the orthogonal projections of a vector onto each coordinate axis. In a Cartesian system, the x-component is the projection onto the x-axis, and the y-component is the projection onto the y-axis. Each vector can be expressed as the vector sum of these perpendicular projections, making components fundamental to vector representation.
Q4: How do you calculate the direction angle of a vector?
The direction angle is the angle a vector makes with the positive x-axis, measured counterclockwise. It is calculated using the tangent function: direction angle = tan⁻¹(y-component/x-component). This angle uniquely defines the vector's orientation in the coordinate system and is essential for vector algebra method of components calculations.
Q5: How do you find vector components when magnitude and direction are known?
The x-component equals the magnitude multiplied by the cosine of the direction angle. The y-component equals the magnitude multiplied by the sine of the direction angle. These trigonometric relationships allow you to decompose a vector into its Cartesian components when only its magnitude and direction are given.
Q6: What is the difference between scalar and vector components?
Scalar components are the numerical magnitudes of a vector along each axis, representing only size without direction. Vector components combine these magnitudes with unit vectors to specify both magnitude and direction. For example, the vector component is 5î while the scalar component is simply 5.
Q7: Why are orthogonal axes important in the Cartesian coordinate system?
Orthogonal axes are mutually perpendicular, ensuring that vector components along each axis are independent and do not overlap. This perpendicularity simplifies calculations and allows any vector to be uniquely represented as the sum of its independent components. The orthogonal structure makes vector decomposition and reconstruction straightforward and unambiguous.
