Q1: What are the main layers of the skin and what does each layer do?
The skin has three main layers: the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. The epidermis is the outermost layer made of epithelial cells that provides a protective barrier against bacteria and UV radiation. The dermis beneath contains dense connective tissue, blood vessels, nerves, and hair follicles. The hypodermis, the deepest layer, stores fat for energy and insulation.
Q2: How does the skin help regulate body temperature?
The skin regulates temperature through blood vessels and sweat glands in the dermis. When the body is hot, blood vessels dilate and sweat glands secrete sweat to dissipate excess heat. When cold, blood vessels constrict to conserve heat. Additionally, adipocytes in the dermis and hypodermis store fat that acts as an insulator to reduce heat loss.
Q3: What determines skin and hair color?
Skin and hair color is primarily determined by melanin, a pigment produced by melanocytes in the epidermis. Two major types of melanin exist in mammals: pheomelanin and eumelanin, each producing characteristic colors.
