Question 1

Why are cylindrical coordinates useful for calculating water tank volume?

Accepted Answer

Cylindrical coordinates simplify volume calculations for objects with rotational symmetry, like paraboloid tanks. They use radial distance r, angular coordinate θ, and vertical coordinate z to naturally describe circular regions. This coordinate system eliminates complexity when integrating over rotationally symmetric geometries, making triple integrals in cylindrical coordinates ideal for engineering applications involving curved, symmetric structures.

Question 2

How does the integration order work when calculating paraboloid tank volume?

Accepted Answer

Integration begins vertically along the z-axis, bounded above by the water level plane and below by the paraboloid surface. As radial distance r increases from zero to the tank boundary, the vertical height changes continuously. Finally, the two-dimensional vertical slice rotates through 2π radians to sweep the complete three-dimensional volume, accumulating contributions from every infinitesimal portion of the tank.

Question 3

What role does rotational symmetry play in modeling the water tank?

Accepted Answer

Rotational symmetry about the vertical axis means the tank's geometry repeats identically at every angular position. This property allows a single two-dimensional vertical slice to represent the entire structure when rotated through all angular positions. Exploiting this symmetry through cylindrical coordinates dramatically simplifies the mathematical description and integration process for calculating total volume.

Question 4

How does the paraboloid surface constraint affect the integration bounds?

Accepted Answer

The paraboloid surface z equals r squared defines the lower bound for vertical integration at each radial position. As r increases from the center outward, this curved boundary rises, changing the height of water at each radius. The upper bound remains constant at the water level z equals 4 meters, creating variable integration limits that accurately capture the tank's curved geometry throughout the volume calculation.

Question 5

What does the two-dimensional vertical slice represent in the triple integral setup?

Accepted Answer

The two-dimensional vertical slice is a cross-section defined by fixed angular position θ, with radial coordinate r and vertical coordinate z varying. This slice shows how height changes as radius increases from center to boundary. When this slice is rotated through all angular positions around the central axis, it generates the complete three-dimensional region occupied by water in the tank.

Question 6

Why is the triple integral approach better than simpler methods for curved tank geometry?

Accepted Answer

Triple integrals directly incorporate the curved paraboloid boundary into calculations, accounting for continuously varying height at each radial position. Simpler geometric formulas assume uniform shapes and cannot handle nonuniform curved boundaries. This mathematical framework accurately models realistic engineering structures with complex geometries, providing precise volume measurements for storage tanks, pipes, and reservoirs with curved surfaces.

Question 7

How do multiple integrals relate to calculating physical quantities in three-dimensional regions?

Accepted Answer

Multiple integrals provide a powerful framework for accumulating physical quantities distributed throughout three-dimensional regions. By dividing the region into infinitesimal elements and summing their contributions, triple integrals calculate total volume, mass, or other properties. This approach extends beyond simple shapes to complex curved geometries, making it essential for engineering applications involving realistic structures with nonuniform boundaries.
