Immunometabolism

Immunometabolism is the study of how cellular metabolism shapes immune-cell function and how immune responses, in turn, remodel metabolic pathways, making it important for understanding and engineering immunity. During activation, immune cells alter nutrient uptake and the balance between glycolysis, oxidative phosphorylation, lipid metabolism, and amino-acid use; metabolites can also act as signaling molecules that regulate gene expression and inflammatory behavior. In bioengineering, these principles guide the design of culture conditions, biomaterials, organ-on-chip models, and cell therapies that control immune states. Such approaches support more predictive disease models and may improve strategies for tissue repair, infection control, and cancer treatment.
