Viral Purity

Viral purity is the degree to which a viral preparation is free from unwanted biological, chemical, and particulate contaminants, making it essential for reliable bioengineering and safe biological products. It is assessed by measuring impurities such as host-cell proteins and DNA, endotoxins, residual process reagents, aggregates, and unwanted viral or microbial agents, while confirming that the intended virus remains intact and functional. Manufacturing processes improve purity through clarified harvests, nuclease treatment, filtration, ultracentrifugation, and chromatography that separate components by size, density, charge, or binding affinity. Controlling viral purity supports consistent viral-vector performance, vaccine quality, and gene-delivery research while reducing variability and potential immune or toxic effects.
