Mobilizable Donor Vectors

Mobilizable donor vectors are DNA constructs designed to transfer genetic material from a donor cell to a recipient, making them useful tools in bioengineering and microbial genetics. These vectors typically carry a mobilization site, such as an oriT sequence, but lack the complete machinery required for self-transfer; helper plasmids or conjugative systems provide transfer proteins that process the DNA and move it through a cell-contact-dependent mating apparatus. Researchers use mobilizable vectors to deliver genes, regulatory elements, or genome-editing components into bacteria that may be difficult to transform directly. Their modular design supports genetic circuit construction, strain engineering, functional studies, and the development of microbial production systems.

Endothelial corneal transplantation is a surgical technique for treatment of posterior corneal diseases. Mechanical microkeratome dissection to prepare tissue results in thinner, more symmetric grafts with less endothelial cell loss and improved outcomes. Dissections can be performed at the eye bank prior to corneal transplantation surgery.

Source: Nicholas Timmons, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment demonstrates how vectors add and subtract in multiple directions. The goal will be to analytically calculate the addition or subtraction of multiple vectors and then to experimentally confirm the calculations. A vector is an object with both magnitude and direction. The magnitude of a vector is simply denoted as the length,...

Conjugation: A Method to Transfer Ampicillin Resistance from Donor to Recipient E. coli

Source: Alexander S. Gold1, Tonya M. Colpitts1 1 Department of Microbiology, Boston University School of Medicine, National Emerging Infections Diseases Laboratories, Boston, MA First discovered by Lederberg and Tatum in 1946, conjugation is a form of horizontal gene transfer between bacteria that relies on direct physical contact between two bacterial cells (1). Unlike other forms of gene transfer, such as transformation or transduction, conjugation is a naturally occurring process in which...
