Platinum Release

Platinum release is the liberation of platinum atoms, ions, or platinum-containing compounds from a solid material into its surrounding environment, an important consideration in bioengineering and biomedical material design. The process depends on material composition, surface chemistry, surrounding fluids, and conditions such as pH, temperature, and exposure time; dissolution, corrosion, or degradation can control how rapidly platinum becomes available. Measuring release profiles helps researchers evaluate the stability, biocompatibility, and performance of platinum-containing implants, electrodes, catalysts, and drug-delivery systems. These analyses support the development of safer materials and more predictable biological or therapeutic responses.

2019

This protocol demonstrates a method for electrochemical roughening of thin-film platinum electrodes without preferential dissolution at grain boundaries. The electrochemical techniques of cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy are demonstrated to characterize these electrode surfaces.

Synthesis of Platinum-nickel Nanowires and Optimization for Oxygen Reduction Performance

2018

The protocol describes the synthesis and electrochemical testing of platinum-nickel nanowires. Nanowires were synthesized by the galvanic displacement of a nickel nanowire template. Post-synthesis processing, including hydrogen annealing, acid leaching, and oxygen annealing were used to optimize nanowire performance and durability in the oxygen reduction reaction.

Energy-releasing Steps of Glycolysis

2019

Glycolysis is divided into two phases based on whether energy is utilized or released. While the first phase consumes ATP, the second phase produces energy in the form of ATP and NADH. The energy is released over a sequence of reactions that turns G3P into pyruvate. The energy-releasing phase—steps 6-10 of glycolysis—occurs twice, once for each of the two 3-carbon sugars produced during steps 1-5 of the first phase. The first energy-releasing step—the 6th step of glycolysis —consists of two...
