Pressure Swing Absorption

Pressure swing absorption is a cyclic gas-separation method that uses changes in pressure to selectively dissolve and release components from a gas mixture. During the high-pressure absorption step, a solvent takes up a more soluble gas, such as carbon dioxide, while less-soluble gases pass through; lowering the pressure then promotes desorption and solvent regeneration. In bioengineering, this principle supports biogas upgrading, carbon dioxide removal, and purification of process gases, improving product quality while reducing the need for continuous solvent replacement. Understanding pressure, solubility, mass transfer, and regeneration cycles helps researchers design efficient systems for sustainable bioprocessing and gas treatment.

The Swing Equation

2024

The Swing Equation is a fundamental tool in power system dynamics, especially for analyzing the behavior of generating units like three-phase synchronous generators. This equation emerges from applying Newton's second law to the rotor of a generator, encompassing factors such as inertia, angular acceleration, and the interplay between mechanical and electrical torques. In a steady-state operation, the mechanical torque (Τm) supplied to the generator is balanced by the electrical torque (Τe)...

The laser heated diamond anvil cell combined with synchrotron micro-diffraction techniques allows researchers to explore the nature and properties of new phases of matter at extreme pressure and temperature (PT) conditions. Heterogeneous samples can be characterized in situ under high pressure by 2D mapping and combined powder, single-crystal and multigrain diffraction approaches.

Drug Absorption: Factors Affecting GI Absorption

The process of oral drug absorption can be influenced by several factors. Weakly acidic drugs tend to be absorbed more readily from the stomach due to their nonionized state. However, absorption may be less efficient in the upper intestine, where drugs are often ionized. Interestingly, despite the stomach's apparent advantage for drug absorption, its mucous layer can hinder diffusion. Its surface area is also smaller than the intestine's, which can further slow down the absorption rate. In...

Carbohydrate Absorption

Carbohydrates are essential macronutrients that serve as the body's primary energy source. Their digestion begins in the mouth, where salivary amylase partially breaks down complex carbohydrates such as starch into smaller oligosaccharides. This mechanical and enzymatic activity prepares carbohydrates for further processing in the gastrointestinal tract. After being swallowed, the partially digested carbohydrates mix with gastric secretions in the stomach. However, the acidic environment...
