Wavelength Conversion

Wavelength conversion is the process of changing light from one wavelength, or color, to another while preserving its usefulness for a particular measurement or application. It can occur when light interacts with a nonlinear optical material, where processes such as frequency doubling, sum-frequency generation, or difference-frequency generation produce new photons with altered energies. In bioengineering, wavelength conversion helps match light sources and detectors to biological samples, enabling fluorescence imaging, optical sensing, spectroscopy, and therapeutic systems. By improving spectral compatibility and access to otherwise difficult wavelengths, these methods can enhance signal detection, reduce background interference, and support more precise analysis of cells, tissues, and biomaterials.

In the macroscopic world, objects that are large enough to be seen by the naked eye follow the rules of classical physics. A billiard ball moving on a table will behave like a particle; it will continue traveling in a straight line unless it collides with another ball, or it is acted on by some other force, such as friction. The ball has a well-defined position and velocity or well-defined momentum, p = mv, which is defined by mass m and velocity v at any given moment. This is the typical...

Other than maintaining genome stability via DNA repair, homologous recombination plays an important role in diversifying the genome. In fact, the recombination of sequences forms the molecular basis of genomic evolution. Random and non-random permutations of genomic sequences create a library of new amalgamated sequences. These newly formed genomes can determine the fitness and survival of cells. In bacteria, homologous and non-homologous types of recombination lead to the evolution of new...

Divide the transwell system into five groups that undergo various treatments. The first group serves as the control and consists of a co-culture of neuroblastoma and microglia cells. In the second group, treat the co-culturer with fibrillar β-amyloid (fAβ) alone. fAβ induces damage in neuroblastoma cells. In the third group, treat neuroblastoma cells with an 808-nanometer laser, then co-culture them with untreated microglia. The laser reduces oxidative stress, improving neuronal survival. In the...

Conversion of Units

Sometimes, there is a need to convert from one unit to another one. For instance, reading a cookbook in which quantities are expressed in units of liters or ounces may require conversion of quantities to cups. Or, when looking up directions on how to get to a location, we may be interested to know how many miles we are going to walk. In this case, we would have to convert units of feet or meters to miles. The first step in the unit conversion is to list the given units and the units required...
