Colony Aspiration

Colony aspiration is a microbiology technique used to remove selected microbial colonies from a solid growth medium for further analysis or cultivation. Using a sterile pipette tip or aspiration device, an operator draws up cells from an isolated colony, often with a small amount of surrounding medium, and transfers the sample into liquid culture or another assay system while minimizing contamination. This method supports clonal isolation, strain propagation, and downstream procedures such as identification, phenotypic testing, and molecular analysis. Careful selection of well-separated colonies and maintenance of aseptic technique improve sample purity and reproducibility in biological research.
