Homozygous

Homozygous describes an organism or cell that carries two identical alleles at a particular gene locus, one inherited from each parent. During meiosis, these matching alleles segregate into gametes, so each gamete receives the same allele for that locus; homozygous individuals may be homozygous dominant or homozygous recessive. This genetic state helps determine whether a trait is expressed, depending on allele function and dominance relationships. In biology, identifying homozygous genotypes supports inheritance studies, selective breeding, genetic screening, and the development of laboratory models for investigating how specific variants influence phenotype and disease.

Evolutionary change is interesting and important to study, but changes in populations occur over long periods of time and in huge physical spaces and are therefore very difficult to measure. In general, studying phenomena like this requires the use of mathematical models which are built using parameters that can be conveniently measured. These models are then used to make predictions about how changes to the system might affect the outcome. For example, changes to the frequency of genetic...

Overview The probability of inheriting a trait can be calculated using the sum and product rules. The sum rule is used to calculate the probability of mutually exclusive events. The product rule predicts the probability of multiple independent events. These probability rules determine theoretical probability—the likelihood of events occurring before they happen. Empirical probability, by contrast, is calculated based on events that have already occurred. The Sum and Product Rules Are...

Even though the human genome was mapped over 10 years ago, scientists are still far from understanding the function of every human gene! One way to evaluate how a gene functions is to disrupt the sequence encoding it and then evaluate the impact of this change (the phenotype) on the animal’s biology. This approach is commonly used in the mouse (Mus musculus), since it shares a high degree of genetic similarity with humans. To track the animals bearing genetic changes over several generations,...

A Behavioral Assay for Mechanosensation of MARCM-based Clones in Drosophila melanogaster

In order to identify novel mutations affecting mechanosensation, we designed an assay that measures the behavioral response to tactile stimulation of fly bristles in mutant clones generated by the MARCM method. The combination of techniques allows for the identification of mechanosensitive mutations that would otherwise be lethal.
