Inferior Mesenteric Vein

The inferior mesenteric vein is a vessel of the portal venous system that returns blood from the distal large intestine, including the descending and sigmoid colon and upper rectum, making it important for understanding abdominal circulation. It collects nutrient-rich, deoxygenated blood through tributaries that accompany branches of the inferior mesenteric artery and usually joins the splenic vein before blood reaches the liver through the hepatic portal vein. Its anatomy and variable connections are relevant to interpreting abdominal imaging, planning colorectal and pancreatic surgery, and understanding portal hypertension and the transport of substances absorbed from the gut.

Laparoscopic Anatomic S7+S8d Resection Preserving Inferior Right Hepatic Vein and S6 with Right Hepatic Vein Transection

2025

We present a laparoscopic technique for anatomic S7+S8d resection with right hepatic vein transection, preserving the inferior right hepatic vein and segment S6. Relying on meticulous anatomical landmarks without intraoperative ultrasound, this approach offers a precise and parenchyma-sparing option for dorsally located right-liver tumors, particularly in settings with limited advanced navigation resources.

The small intestine is frequently exposed to toxins that can influence blood flow and negatively impact nutrient absorption. Using a multimyograph and mesenteric artery and vein isolates, compounds or toxins of interest can be screened for vasoactivity.

Lateral Canthotomy and Inferior Cantholysis

2023

Source: James W Bonz, MD, Emergency Medicine, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, USA Lateral canthotomy is a potentially eyesight-saving procedure when performed emergently for an orbital compartment syndrome. An orbital compartment syndrome results from a buildup of pressure behind the eye; as pressure mounts, both the optic nerve and its vascular supply are compressed, rapidly leading to nerve damage and blindness if the pressure is not quickly relieved. The medial and lateral...
