Viral Progeny

Viral progeny are the new virus particles generated when a parent virus replicates inside a susceptible host cell, making them a central outcome of viral infection and a key measure in virology. After entry, the viral genome directs replication of its nucleic acid and synthesis of viral proteins; these components then assemble into complete virions, which may leave the cell through lysis, budding, or other release pathways. Studying progeny production helps researchers quantify infectivity, define replication cycles, compare viral strains, and evaluate antiviral treatments. It also supports vaccine development and analysis of how viruses spread between cells and hosts.

The goal of this protocol is to alter the penetrance of lethal skeletal mutant phenotypes in zebrafish by selective breeding. Lethal mutants cannot be grown to adulthood and bred themselves, therefore this protocol describes a method for tracking and selecting penetrance through multiple generations by progeny testing.

Identification Of Erythromyeloid Progenitors And Their Progeny In The Mouse Embryo By Flow Cytometry

While infiltrating macrophages are continuously recruited to adult tissues from circulating precursors, resident macrophages seed their tissue during development, where they are maintained without further input from progenitors. The progenitors for resident macrophages were recently identified. Here, we present methods for the genetic fate mapping of the resident macrophage progenitors.

Exp., (2022)This video demonstrates a crystal violet staining method to visualize cytopathic effects in virus-infected cell cultures. The pattern of stained and unstained wells across serial dilutions enables rapid, cost-effective estimation of the viral infectious dose.
