Charcoal Cavity Test

The charcoal cavity test is a qualitative chemistry technique used to identify certain metallic compounds through their behavior when heated on charcoal. A powdered sample, often mixed with sodium carbonate, is placed in a small cavity and exposed to a reducing blowpipe flame; the charcoal promotes reduction of metal oxides, producing a metallic bead, residue, or colored incrustation. These visible products can indicate the presence of metals and help distinguish minerals or inorganic substances in preliminary analysis. Although largely replaced by instrumental methods, the test demonstrates redox reactions, thermal decomposition, and the practical principles of classical inorganic identification.

A Charcoal Agar Resazurin Assay to Evaluate Test Compound Activity Against Mycobacteria

2025

This video showcases the Charcoal Agar Resazurin Assay (CARA) for evaluating the activity of antimicrobial compounds against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. CARA aids in assessing the efficacy of these compounds by gauging their impact on bacterial growth and distinguishing between bactericidal and bacteriostatic effects.

The charcoal agar resazurin assay (CARA) is a semi-quantitative, medium-throughput method to assess activity of test agents against mycobacteria that are replicating, non-replicating, or both. The CARA permits rapid evaluation of time- and concentration-dependent activity and identifies parameters to pursue by colony forming unit (CFU) assays.

The oral cavity, or the mouth, is a complex structure in humans that plays a vital role in our day-to-day lives. Its role is not only in chewing and swallowing food; it also plays a role in speech and facial expressions. Teeth: The teeth are the hardest structures in our bodies. Humans have two sets of teeth throughout their lifetime: deciduous (baby) teeth and permanent teeth. Each tooth consists of several parts: the crown (visible part), the root (embedded in the jaw), enamel (hard outer...

The peritoneal cavity in mammals contains different immune cell populations crucial for innate immune responses. An efficient isolation method is required for biochemical and functional analyses of these cells. Here we provide a comprehensive method for the isolation of peritoneal cavity cells in the mouse.
