Cyclic Hydrocarbons

Cyclic hydrocarbons are organic compounds composed only of carbon and hydrogen, with carbon atoms joined into one or more closed rings. Their structures range from saturated cycloalkanes with single carbon-carbon bonds to unsaturated and aromatic rings, whose bonding and electron delocalization influence stability, shape, and reactivity. Ring strain can affect how readily smaller rings undergo reactions, while larger rings adopt conformations that reduce steric interactions. In chemistry, cyclic hydrocarbons serve as fuels, solvents, and starting materials for polymers, pharmaceuticals, and other functional molecules, making their structure-property relationships essential to synthesis, materials science, and industrial chemistry.

Cyclic Voltammetry (CV)

2023

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Kayla Green — Texas Christian University A Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) experiment involves the scan of a range of potential voltages while measuring current. In the CV experiment, the potential of an immersed, stationary electrode is scanned from a predetermined starting potential to a final value (called the switching potential) and then the reverse scan is obtained. This gives a 'cyclic' sweep of potentials and the current vs. potential curve derived from the data is...

Removal of Branched and Cyclic Compounds by Urea Adduction for Uk'37 Paleothermometry

Source: Laboratory of Jeff Salacup - University of Massachusetts Amherst As mentioned in previous videos, the product of an organic solvent extraction, a total lipid extract (TLE), is often a complex mixture of hundreds, if not thousands, of different compounds. The researcher is often only interested in a handful of compounds. In the case of our two organic paleothermometers (Uk'37 and MBT/CBT), the interest is in only 6 compounds (2 alkenones and 4 isoprenoidal glycerol dialkyl glycerol...

Microbial Bioremediation of Hydrocarbons

2026

Bioremediation is an environmentally sustainable process that employs living organisms—primarily microorganisms—to degrade or neutralize pollutants from contaminated environments. In oil spills and hydrocarbon pollution, bioremediation involves the use of hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria to transform toxic compounds into less harmful substances. This approach leverages natural microbial metabolic processes and is considered both cost-effective and ecologically favorable compared to physical or...
