Photo Polymerization

Photopolymerization is a chemical process that uses light to convert liquid or dissolved monomers into solid polymers, enabling rapid, spatially controlled material formation. When a photoinitiator absorbs light at a suitable wavelength, it generates reactive radicals or cations that initiate chain-growth polymerization; light intensity, exposure time, monomer composition, and oxygen inhibition influence the reaction. This method supports coatings, adhesives, dental materials, microfabrication, and additive manufacturing, including light-based 3D printing. Its ability to cure selected regions with precise timing and geometry makes photopolymerization valuable for producing functional materials while reducing processing steps and energy demands.
