Physical Phases

Physical phases are distinct forms of matter, such as solids, liquids, gases, and plasmas, defined by how particles are arranged and how freely they move. In chemistry, phase behavior depends on temperature, pressure, particle energy, and intermolecular forces; changes such as melting, vaporization, condensation, and freezing occur when these conditions alter particle motion and interactions. Phase diagrams show the stable phase of a substance across different temperatures and pressures, including boundaries and special points such as the triple point. Understanding physical phases supports reaction design, materials processing, separation methods, and the control of chemical systems in laboratory and industrial settings.

2018

The kinetics of the cooling process defines the properties of ionic gels based on low molecular weight gelators. This manuscript describes the usage of thermal scanning conductometry (TSC), which obtains full control over the gelation process, along with in situ measurements of the samples' temperature and conductivity.

Source: Jaideep S. Talwalkar, MD, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT The examination of the body is fundamental to the practice of medicine. Since the Roman Empire, physicians have described the connection between alterations in function of specific parts of the body and specific disease states and have sought to further scientific understanding to improve bedside diagnosis. However, in this modern age of increasing technology within medical diagnostics, it...

Physical Properties Of Minerals II: Polymineralic Analysis

2023

Source: Laboratory of Alan Lester - University of Colorado Boulder The physical properties of minerals include various measurable and discernible attributes, including color, streak, magnetic properties, hardness, crystal growth form, and crystal cleavage. These properties are mineral-specific, and they are fundamentally related to a particular mineral’s chemical make-up and atomic structure. This video examines several physical properties that are useful in field and hand sample mineral...

Phase Diagrams

2020

A phase diagram combines plots of pressure versus temperature for the liquid-gas, solid-liquid, and solid-gas phase-transition equilibria of a substance. These diagrams indicate the physical states that exist under specific conditions of pressure and temperature and also provide the pressure dependence of the phase-transition temperatures (melting points, sublimation points, boiling points). Regions or areas labeled solid, liquid, and gas represent single phases, while lines or curves represent...

Single Phase Transformers

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. Transformers are stationary electric machines that step up or down AC voltage. They are typically formed of primary and secondary coils or windings, where the voltage on the primary is stepped up or down at the secondary, or the other way around. When a voltage is applied to one of the windings and current flows in that winding, flux is induced in the magnetic core, coupling both windings. With an AC...
