Wavelength Specific Filters

Wavelength-specific filters are optical components that selectively transmit or block defined regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, enabling precise control of the light used or measured in chemical experiments. They operate through wavelength-dependent absorption, reflection, or interference, with designs such as bandpass, long-pass, and short-pass filters isolating particular spectral ranges. In chemistry, these filters improve selectivity in spectroscopy, fluorescence measurements, colorimetric assays, and imaging by reducing unwanted background light and separating excitation from emitted radiation. Their use supports more reliable detection, quantitative analysis, and characterization of substances based on their interactions with light.

The de Broglie Wavelength

In the macroscopic world, objects that are large enough to be seen by the naked eye follow the rules of classical physics. A billiard ball moving on a table will behave like a particle; it will continue traveling in a straight line unless it collides with another ball, or it is acted on by some other force, such as friction. The ball has a well-defined position and velocity or well-defined momentum, p = mv, which is defined by mass m and velocity v at any given moment. This is the typical...

Passive filters are utilized to shape the frequency spectrum of signals across a diverse array of applications. These filters, using only passive elements like resistors (R), inductors (L), and capacitors (C), are capable of selectively allowing or blocking certain frequency ranges without the need for external power sources. Low-Pass Filters Low-pass filters are designed to transmit signals with frequencies lower than the cutoff frequency, ωc, and attenuate those above it. The cutoff frequency...

Here, we present a study to evaluate the anti-viral efficacy of copper- and silver-based surface coatings on air filters. Using a bioaerosol chamber and Phi6 bacteriophage, this method quantifies viral inactivation and mechanical filtration efficiency for self-sanitizing indoor air technologies.

Active Filters

Active filters are electronic circuits that use operational amplifiers (op-amps), resistors, and capacitors to filter out unwanted frequency components from a signal. A first-order low-pass active filter is designed to pass signals with a frequency lower than a certain cutoff frequency and attenuate frequencies higher than that cutoff frequency. The transfer function for a first-order low-pass active filter is: Where Af is the gain at low frequencies also known as the dc gain, s is the...

Divide the transwell system into five groups that undergo various treatments. The first group serves as the control and consists of a co-culture of neuroblastoma and microglia cells. In the second group, treat the co-culturer with fibrillar β-amyloid (fAβ) alone. fAβ induces damage in neuroblastoma cells. In the third group, treat neuroblastoma cells with an 808-nanometer laser, then co-culture them with untreated microglia. The laser reduces oxidative stress, improving neuronal survival. In the...
