Central Line Placement

Central line placement is a clinical procedure that inserts a catheter into a large central vein to provide reliable vascular access when peripheral access is inadequate or prolonged therapy is required. Using sterile technique, clinicians typically identify a suitable vein with ultrasound, advance a needle, guidewire, and catheter through the vessel, then confirm the catheter tip position and assess for complications such as bleeding, infection, thrombosis, or pneumothorax. Central lines support infusion of medications, fluids, blood products, and parenteral nutrition, while also enabling hemodynamic monitoring and repeated blood sampling in critically ill patients.

Source: Julianna Jung, MD, FACEP, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, USA For unstable patients requiring urgent administration of medications, fluids, or blood products, establishing vascular access quickly is essential. However, there are many factors that can complicate placement of a peripheral intravenous cannula (PIV), and it is extremely common for PIV attempts to fail. PIV placement may be technically challenging in small...

Source: Sharon Bord, MD, Department of Emergency Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, USA When monitoring patients, it is important to obtain values that are accurate and reliable. Blood pressure monitoring is one of the essential vital signs, and for a majority of patients, measuring it utilizing non-invasive techniques provides accurate values. However, there are situations in which the blood pressure requires more exact, specific, and reliable measurements.

The overall goal is to enable clinicians to insert a central venous catheter under real-time ultrasound guidance via the right supraclavicular fossa view of the lower part of the superior vena cava. This view is useful for different catheter insertion sites, thrombosis detection before insertion and ultrasound guided correction of misplaced catheters.

The Central Dogma

2019

Overview The central dogma of biology states that information encoded in the DNA is transferred to messenger RNA (mRNA), which then directs the synthesis of protein. The set of instructions that enable the mRNA nucleotide sequence to be decoded into amino acids is called the genetic code. The universal nature of this genetic code has spurred advances in scientific research, agriculture, and medicine. RNA Is the Missing Link between DNA and Proteins In the early 1900s, scientists discovered...
