Empirical Approach

An empirical approach is a systematic way of building knowledge from direct observation, measurement, and testable evidence rather than relying solely on theory or assumption. In clinical research, investigators formulate questions, collect data from patients or controlled studies, and analyze outcomes to evaluate whether an intervention, diagnostic method, or proposed explanation is supported by evidence. This approach helps distinguish effective treatments from ineffective ones, assess diagnostic accuracy, and identify patterns in disease and recovery. By linking clinical decisions to reproducible observations and transparent analysis, empirical methods strengthen evidence-based practice while revealing where further research is needed.

Determining the Empirical Formula

2023

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Neal Abrams - SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry Determining the chemical formula of a compound is at the heart of what chemists do in the laboratory every day. Many tools are available to aid in this determination, but one of the simplest (and most accurate) is the determination of the empirical formula. Why is this useful? Because of the law of conservation of mass, any reaction can be followed gravimetrically, or by change in mass. The empirical...

Empirical Method to Interpret Standard Deviation

2023

The empirical rule, also known as the three-sigma rule, allows a statistician to interpret the standard deviation in a normally distributed dataset. The rule states that 68% of the data lies within one standard deviation from the mean, 95% lies within two standard deviations from the mean, and 99.7% lies within three standard deviations from the mean. Additionally, this rule is also called the 68-95-99.7 rule. This rule is used widely in statistics to calculate the proportion of data values...

Microbial consortia within bumble bee hives enrich and preserve pollen for bee larvae. Using next generation sequencing, along with laboratory and field-based experiments, this manuscript describes protocols used to test the hypothesis that fungicide residues alter the pollen microbiome, and colony demographics, ultimately leading to colony loss.

Frustration and Conflict: Approach-Approach, Approach-Avoidance

2025

Frustration occurs when people are obstructed or prevented from achieving a desired goal or fulfilling a perceived need. For example, when someone's input is ignored in a discussion, it can lead to feelings of frustration. Conflict, however, arises from opposing interests, goals, or actions. Conflicts can take various forms based on the nature of these opposing desires or goals. One common type of conflict is the Approach–Approach Conflict. In this case, a person faces two desirable options,...

Source: Jaideep S. Talwalkar, MD, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT The examination of the body is fundamental to the practice of medicine. Since the Roman Empire, physicians have described the connection between alterations in function of specific parts of the body and specific disease states and have sought to further scientific understanding to improve bedside diagnosis. However, in this modern age of increasing technology within medical diagnostics, it...
