External Inspection

External inspection is a noninvasive clinical assessment in which a healthcare professional visually examines the body, its surfaces, and visible features for signs of health or disease. Using adequate lighting and a systematic approach, the examiner evaluates color, symmetry, contour, swelling, lesions, deformities, and movement, while comparing findings across regions or with expected anatomy. This initial observation can guide further examination, support early recognition of abnormalities, and help determine whether additional tests are needed. External inspection is used across clinical specialties for routine assessment, injury evaluation, disease monitoring, and documenting changes over time.
