Head And Neck Exam

A head and neck exam is a systematic clinical assessment of the face, scalp, eyes, ears, nose, mouth, throat, neck, and related cranial nerves, helping distinguish normal anatomy from potential disease. During the examination, clinicians use inspection, palpation, auscultation, and targeted functional tests to evaluate symmetry, skin and mucosal changes, lymph nodes, salivary glands, the thyroid, airway structures, range of motion, and cranial nerve responses. Findings can guide differential diagnosis, identify infection, inflammation, masses, or neurologic abnormalities, and determine whether further testing, imaging, specialist referral, or urgent intervention is needed in clinical practice.

Arteries of the Head and Neck

2024

The human body's intricate network of arteries ensures that every organ system receives the necessary oxygen and nutrients for optimal function. The arterial network in the head and neck region is particularly complex, providing vital blood flow to the brain, eyes, and other critical structures. Prominent arteries in this region include the internal carotid arteries and the vertebral arteries. The internal carotid arteries supply blood to the anterior portion of the cerebrum. They enter the...

Veins of Head and Neck

The blood drainage from the head and neck is primarily managed by three pairs of veins: the external jugular, internal jugular, and vertebral veins. The external jugular veins drain superficial scalp and face structures, passing over the sternocleidomastoid muscles to empty into the subclavian veins. On the other hand, the vertebral veins, unlike their arterial counterparts, are not primarily responsible for brain drainage. Instead, they drain the cervical vertebrae, spinal cord, and some small...

A Model for Perineural Invasion in Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Perineural invasion (PNI) is a common feature of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), conferring lower survival rates. Its mechanisms are poorly understood. Utilizing neurites generated from murine dorsal root ganglia confined to a semisolid matrix, the pathways involved in the PNI of HNSCC cell lines can be investigated.
