Monocyte Phagocytosis

Monocyte phagocytosis is the process by which circulating monocytes recognize, engulf, and digest pathogens, cellular debris, and other particles, contributing to innate immune defense and inflammation. After surface receptors bind targets directly or through opsonins, the monocyte extends its membrane around the material to form a phagosome, which then fuses with lysosomes containing enzymes and antimicrobial molecules for degradation. In clinical research, measuring monocyte phagocytic activity helps assess immune function, characterize inflammatory and infectious diseases, and evaluate how treatments influence host defense. These studies also clarify how monocytes mature into macrophages and coordinate tissue repair and immune regulation.
