Plankton Collector

A plankton collector is a device used to capture plankton, the diverse organisms and particles that drift in aquatic environments, for identification, measurement, and laboratory study. Typically, water passes through a fine mesh as the collector is towed, deployed, or positioned in flowing water; the mesh retains organisms while excess water drains away, concentrating the sample. In developmental biology, collected plankton can include embryos, larvae, and other early life stages, allowing researchers to examine development, morphology, abundance, and responses to environmental conditions. Standardized collection supports comparisons among habitats and helps connect organismal development with aquatic ecosystem change.

With solar energy as the driving force, a novel adsorption refrigeration system has been developed and experimentally investigated. Water vapor and zeolite formed the working pair of the adsorption system. This manuscript describes the setup of the experimental rig, the operation procedure, and the important results.

Concentration of Metabolites from Low-density Planktonic Communities for Environmental Metabolomics using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

A method for metabolite extraction from microbial planktonic communities is presented. Whole community sampling is achieved by filtration onto specially prepared filters. After lyophilization, aqueous-soluble metabolites are extracted. This approach allows for application of environmental metabolomics to trans-omics investigations of natural or experimental microbial communities.

Automated HPLC Separation Using LC-Mate: An Integrated Repetitive Autosampler and Fraction Collector for Microscale Purification

2026

An integrated autosampler and fraction collector (LC-mate) was developed to automate repetitive HPLC separations. Compatible with HPLC detectors that output analog signals, LC-mate enhances the performance of manually operated systems and accelerates research workflows that depend on high-performance liquid chromatography.

This protocol allows for a direct comparison between planktonic and biofilm resistance for a bacterial strain that can form a biofilm in vitro using a 96-well microtiter plate. Planktonic or biofilm bacteria are exposed to serial dilutions of the antimicrobial agent of choice. Viability is assayed by growth on agar plates.
