Light Scattering Enhancement

Light scattering enhancement is the deliberate increase of a material’s or structure’s ability to redirect incident light, a principle used to control optical transport in engineering systems. It occurs when dispersed particles, surface features, or resonant architectures create refractive-index contrasts and increase the probability of reflection, refraction, or multiple scattering. Engineers apply this strategy in coatings, optical sensors, imaging components, displays, and light-management layers for photovoltaic devices. By tailoring particle size, concentration, geometry, and wavelength response, researchers can improve brightness, signal strength, diffuse reflectance, or optical path length while balancing absorption, transparency, and unwanted losses.

Source: Moore, M. D., et al. Alternative In Vitro Methods for the Determination of Viral Capsid Structural Integrity. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)The video demonstrates a protocol for monitoring the heat-induced aggregation of virus-like particles using dynamic light scattering (DLS). It begins with preparing a monodisperse suspension of purified particles. The sample is then loaded into a preheated DLS instrument. As the capsid proteins denature with heat, exposed hydrophobic regions cause particle...

A photo-thermal angular light scattering (PT-AS) sensor enables the rapid and chemical-free hemoglobin assay of nanoliter-scale blood samples. Here, details of the PT-AS setup and a measurement protocol for the hemoglobin concentration in blood are provided. Representative results for anemic blood samples are also presented.

We present a non-destructive method for sampling spatial variation in the direction of light scattered from structurally complex materials. By keeping the material intact, we preserve gross-scale scattering behavior, while concurrently capturing fine-scale directional contributions with high-resolution imaging. Results are visualized in software at biologically-relevant positions and scales.

Polycrystalline Silicon Thin-film Solar cells with Plasmonic-enhanced Light-trapping

Polycrystalline silicon thin-film solar cells on glass are fabricated by deposition of boron and phosphorous doped silicon layers followed by crystallisation, defect passivation and metallisation. Plasmonic light-trapping is introduced by forming Ag nanoparticles on the silicon cell surface capped with a diffused reflector resulting in ~45% photocurrent enhancement.
