Micro Coil Preparation

Micro coil preparation is the engineering process of forming small helical coils with controlled geometry and material properties for use in compact devices. During preparation, fine wire is wound around a mandrel or shaped support while tension, diameter, pitch, and alignment are controlled; subsequent fixation or thermal treatment can stabilize the coil when required. This approach produces repeatable inductive, electromagnetic, mechanical, or sensing elements for microelectromechanical systems, miniature actuators, sensors, and medical instruments. Reliable preparation improves dimensional consistency and performance, supporting reproducible fabrication and integration in advanced engineering systems.

We have developed an in vitro unfolded hippocampus which preserves CA1-CA3 array of neurons. Combined with the penetrating micro-electrode array, neural activity can be monitored in both the longitudinal and transverse orientations. This method provides advantages over hippocampal slice preparations as the propagation in the entire hippocampus can be recorded simultaneously.
