True North

True North is the direction along a meridian toward Earth’s geographic North Pole, providing a fixed reference for orientation and measurement. In engineering, it is established from geographic coordinates, astronomical observations, or geodetic models, unlike Magnetic North, which varies with location and changes over time because of Earth’s magnetic field. Engineers use True North to define azimuths and bearings, align surveys and maps, orient infrastructure, and coordinate navigation or site plans. Distinguishing it from magnetic direction helps maintain consistent spatial references, reduce alignment errors, and support accurate communication across surveying, civil, geospatial, and transportation projects.

True Stress and True Strain

2024

Engineering stress is calculated as the load divided by the original, undeformed cross-sectional area. It approximates a material under load. This approximation is especially relevant post-yield in ductile materials. Though engineering stress-strain diagrams are often used for their convenience and accessibility, they can sometimes fall short in accuracy, particularly when dealing with large strain values. In contrast, true stress offers a more precise portrayal. It is computed by dividing the...

Detection of True IgE-expressing Mouse B Lineage Cells

In vitro analysis of class switch recombination in mice is challenging due to cytophilic IgE molecules bound to Fc receptors on the surface of B cells. We describe a method for IgE detection using trypsin-mediated cleavage of surface-bound IgE prior to fixation and permeabilization for cytoplasmic fluorescence staining.

Responding for food or drug-paired cues increases over the course of a period of abstinence and this may relate to an increased susceptibility to relapse behaviors. Here we detail a procedure for evaluating this "incubation of craving" in rats that have self-administered sucrose.

Two methods of cholesterol enrichment are presented: the application of cyclodextrin saturated with cholesterol to enrich mammalian tissues and cells, and the use of cholesterol-enriched phospholipid-based dispersions (liposomes) to enrich Xenopus oocytes. These methods are instrumental for determining the impact of elevated cholesterol levels in molecular, cellular, and organ function.
