Field Portable Water Sensor

A field portable water sensor is a compact analytical device that measures physical, chemical, or biological indicators of water quality directly at a sampling site, reducing reliance on laboratory testing. Depending on its design, the sensor uses electrodes, optical components, or reagent-based assays to convert properties such as pH, temperature, conductivity, turbidity, or contaminant concentration into an electronic or visual signal. These instruments support rapid environmental monitoring, pollution detection, drinking-water assessment, and watershed research by providing timely data for decisions in locations where laboratory facilities, power, or sample transport are limited.

We demonstrate use of a fiber optic distributed sensor for mapping the temperature field of mixing air jets. The Rayleigh scattering-based sensor generates thousands of data points along a single fiber to provide exceptional spatial resolution that is unattainable with traditional sensors such as thermocouples.

A high-sensitivity photonic micro sensor was developed for electric field detection. The sensor exploits the optical modes of a dielectric sphere. Changes in the external electric field perturb the sphere morphology leading to shifts in its optical modes. The electric field strength is measured by monitoring these optical shifts.

The hydraulic capacitance of biomass is a key component of the vegetation water budget, which serves as a buffer against short and long-term drought stresses. Here, we present a protocol for the calibration and use of soil moisture capacitance sensors to monitor water content in the stems of large trees.

Rapid Diagnosis of Avian Influenza Virus in Wild Birds: Use of a Portable rRT-PCR and Freeze-dried Reagents in the Field

This study describes diagnosis of avian influenza in wild birds using a portable rRT-PCR system. The method takes advantage of freeze-dried reagents to screen wild birds in a non-laboratory setting, typical of an outbreak scenario. Use of molecular tools provides accurate and sensitive alternatives for rapid diagnosis.
