Root Uptake

Root uptake is the process by which plant roots absorb water, mineral nutrients, and other dissolved substances from the surrounding soil, making it essential for plant growth and ecosystem nutrient cycling. Water enters root tissues mainly through osmosis, while mineral ions move across root hairs and epidermal cells through membrane transport proteins, following concentration gradients or requiring energy-dependent active transport; the endodermis regulates movement into the vascular system. In environmental science, root uptake helps explain plant responses to soil fertility, salinity, and contamination. It also informs irrigation and nutrient management, ecological studies, and phytoremediation strategies that use plants to remove or stabilize pollutants.

Radiolabeled Amino Acid Uptake Assay to Quantify Cellular Uptake of Amino Acids

2025

This video demonstrates an in vitro technique for estimating amino acid uptake by bone marrow-derived stromal cells. Na+-dependent amino acid transporters mediate the uptake of radiolabeled amino acids inside the cells, and the cellular uptake is estimated by measuring the radioactivity.

Mitochondrial Calcium Uptake Assay: A Plate Reader-Based Method for Measuring Calcium Uptake in Isolated Mitochondria

Source: Cafini, F., et.al. Methodology for the Study of Horizontal Gene Transfer in Staphylococcus aureus. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)This video demonstrates competence-induced DNA uptake in Staphylococcus aureus through natural transformation. A chloramphenicol-sensitive strain engineered to constitutively express a sigma factor is cultured under nutrient-limiting conditions to enhance competence, then incubated with donor DNA carrying a resistance gene. Successful gene transfer is confirmed by the...

Full-root Aortic Valve Replacement by Stentless Aortic Xenografts in Patients with Small Aortic Roots

Full-root aortic valve replacement by stentless aortic xenograft is a viable option in patients with small aortic roots. We describe, a technique for the full-root implantation of stentless aortic xenografts, with emphasis on the management of the proximal suture line and coronary anastomoses, and discuss its limitations and alternative options.
