Branched Compound Removal

Branched compound removal is the separation or degradation of molecules with side-chain structures from environmental media such as water, soil, or wastewater, an important step in pollution control and resource protection. Because branching changes molecular shape, hydrophobicity, solubility, and resistance to microbial attack, treatment systems may combine biodegradation with adsorption, membrane separation, or chemical oxidation to transfer or break down these compounds. Selecting a process requires matching contaminant structure and concentration with matrix conditions, including pH, temperature, and competing substances. Effective removal can reduce environmental persistence and potential toxicity while supporting monitoring, remediation, and safer water reuse.

Removal of Branched and Cyclic Compounds by Urea Adduction for Uk'37 Paleothermometry

2023

Source: Laboratory of Jeff Salacup - University of Massachusetts Amherst As mentioned in previous videos, the product of an organic solvent extraction, a total lipid extract (TLE), is often a complex mixture of hundreds, if not thousands, of different compounds. The researcher is often only interested in a handful of compounds. In the case of our two organic paleothermometers (Uk'37 and MBT/CBT), the interest is in only 6 compounds (2 alkenones and 4 isoprenoidal glycerol dialkyl glycerol...

Glycogen Branching Assay to Measure the Degree of Glycogen Branching

2025

In this video, we describe a qualitative spectrophotometric assay to determine the extent of branching in a glycogen sample with an uncharacterized structure. Comparing the absorbance maxima of the uncharacterized sample with that of polysaccharides with known branched structures indicates the presence of branching in the uncharacterized sample.

Organic Compounds

All living things are formed mostly of carbon compounds called organic compounds. The category of organic compounds includes both natural and synthetic compounds that contain carbon. Although a single, precise definition has yet to be identified by the chemistry community, most agree that a defining trait of organic molecules is the presence of carbon as the principal element, bonded to hydrogen and other carbon atoms. However, some carbon-containing compounds such as carbonates, cyanides, and...

Branches of Accounting

2025

Financial accounting is essential for recording and reporting an organization's financial transactions. Statements like the balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement provide a clear picture of the financial position. These reports are mainly used by external stakeholders such as investors, creditors, regulatory authorities, and tax officials to make informed decisions. The importance of financial accounting lies in its ability to ensure transparency, compliance with legal...

Compound Administration II

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN Compound administration is often an integral component of an animal study. Many factors need to be evaluated to ensure that the compound is delivered correctly. The route of administration affects the mechanisms of absorption. The characteristics of the substance to be introduced (the pH, viscosity, and concentration) may dictate which route of administration is selected.
