Competitor Strain Spraying

Competitor strain spraying is a microbial intervention that applies a selected competitor strain by spraying it onto a surface or host environment to limit establishment of a targeted pathogen. The introduced strain can act through competitive exclusion, occupying attachment sites and consuming nutrients before the pathogen colonizes; in some systems, it may also alter local conditions or produce inhibitory factors. In immunology and infection research, this approach helps test how microbial community composition affects colonization resistance and host exposure to infection. Its findings can inform strategies for preventing pathogen carriage, evaluating protective microbial communities, and understanding interactions between resident microbes and immune defenses.
