This study investigates competitive interactions between two bacterial strains using fluorescent markers. The competitor strain outcompetes the reference strain through contact-dependent and contact-independent mechanisms, leading to growth arrest and reduced fluorescence in the reference strain.
Quantifying competitive interactions between bacterial strains is critical for de-risking early discovery in anti-infective and microbiome-targeted R&D. The coincubation assay enables mechanistic interrogation of contact-dependent and contact-independent bacterial antagonism, supporting predictive confidence in target validation and functional screening. This approach informs portfolio decisions by clarifying microbial interaction pathways relevant to therapeutic development.
The coincubation assay fits within the early discovery to lead identification continuum, providing a standardized platform for hypothesis testing and mechanistic de-risking in microbial R&D.
