Continuous Wave

Continuous wave describes a signal or oscillation that persists without interruption, typically maintaining a stable frequency and amplitude rather than being delivered as separate pulses. Its continuous energy output interacts with matter over time, producing measurable changes in phenomena such as absorption, fluorescence, scattering, or resonance, depending on the wave type and experimental conditions. In immunology and infection research, continuous-wave sources can support optical measurements of immune cells, microorganisms, and labeled biomolecules, providing steady excitation for analytical assays and imaging systems. These measurements help characterize cellular responses, pathogen-associated features, and molecular interactions while enabling consistent signal collection.

2014

We describe the reliable generation of non-Gaussian states of traveling optical fields, including single-photon states and coherent state superpositions, using a conditional preparation method operated on the non-classical light emitted by optical parametric oscillators. Type-I and type-II phase-matched oscillators are considered and common procedures, such as the required frequency filtering or the high-efficiency quantum state characterization by homodyning, are detailed.

Peripheral Vascular Exam Using a Continuous Wave Doppler

2015

Source: Joseph Donroe, MD, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT Peripheral vascular disease (PVD) is a common condition affecting older adults and includes disease of the peripheral arteries and veins. While the history and physical exam offer clues to its diagnosis, Doppler ultrasound has become a routine part of the bedside vascular examination. The video titled "The Peripheral Vascular Exam" gave a detailed review of the physical examination of the...

High-speed Continuous-wave Stimulated Brillouin Scattering Spectrometer for Material Analysis

2017

We describe the construction of a rapid continuous-wave-stimulated-Brillouin-scattering (CW-SBS) spectrometer. The spectrometer employs single-frequency diode-lasers and an atomic vapor notch-filter to acquire transmission spectra of turbid/non-turbid samples with high spectral-resolution at speeds up to 100-fold faster than those of existing CW-SBS spectrometers. This improvement enables high-speed Brillouin material analysis.

Standing Waves

Source: Arianna Brown, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA Standing waves, or stationary waves, are waves that appear not to propagate and are produced by the interference of two waves traveling in opposite directions with the same frequency and amplitude. These waves appear to vibrate up and down with no linear movement and are most easily identified in vibrating finite media like a plucked guitar string,...
