Cytopathic Effect Assay

Cytopathic effect (CPE) assay is a laboratory method for detecting and measuring cell damage caused by infectious agents, especially viruses, in cultured cells. It works by exposing susceptible cell monolayers to a test sample and monitoring virus-induced changes such as rounding, detachment, fusion, or cell death, often relative to uninfected controls. Microscopy can score these changes, while viability measurements and dilution series can estimate infectious titer or the concentration needed to produce a defined effect. In immunology and infection research, CPE assays support virus isolation, neutralizing antibody testing, antiviral evaluation, and comparisons of viral pathogenicity, providing a practical link between cellular injury and infectious activity.
