Ovine Skin Model

The ovine skin model is an experimental system that uses sheep skin or living sheep to study skin biology, immune responses, and infectious disease. Because ovine skin shares important structural and immunological features with human skin, researchers can examine how the epidermal barrier, innate defenses, inflammatory cells, and adaptive immunity respond to a pathogen, antigen, or treatment under controlled conditions. Measurements such as tissue changes, immune-cell recruitment, cytokine production, and pathogen burden help clarify disease mechanisms and treatment effects. This model supports immunology and infection research by connecting laboratory findings with tissue-level responses in a physiologically relevant setting.

2025

The video demonstrates the generation of an ex vivo ovine skin model infected with Staphylococcus aureus. This entails treating a lamb's forehead skin biopsy section with antibiotics, establishing a wound bed, positioning it on a permeable membrane in a multiwell plate with antibiotic-free medium, and establishing bacterial infection in the skin wound.

Ovine Lumbar Intervertebral Disc Degeneration Model Utilizing a Lateral Retroperitoneal Drill Bit Injury

Intervertebral disc degeneration is a significant contributor to back pain and a leading cause of disability worldwide. Numerous animal models of intervertebral disc degeneration exist. We demonstrate an ovine model of intervertebral disc degeneration, utilizing a drill bit, which achieves a consistent disc injury and reproducible level of disc degeneration.

A Novel High-Throughput Ex Vivo Ovine Skin Wound Model for Testing Emerging Antibiotics

2022

The protocol describes a step-by-step method to set up an ex vivo ovine wounded skin model infected with Staphylococcus aureus. This high-throughput model better simulates infections in vivo compared with conventional microbiology techniques and presents researchers with a physiologically relevant platform to test the efficacy of emerging antimicrobials.
