Achilles Tendinopathy

Achilles tendinopathy is a painful disorder of the Achilles tendon, the strong connective tissue linking the calf muscles to the heel, and it can limit walking, running, and jumping. Repetitive loading may exceed the tendon’s capacity to adapt, leading to altered collagen organization, reduced mechanical strength, and changes in the surrounding tissue rather than inflammation alone. Clinical assessment uses symptoms, physical examination, and sometimes imaging to guide diagnosis and exclude tendon rupture or other causes of heel pain. Treatment commonly emphasizes progressive exercise, activity modification, and load management, supporting recovery and helping patients safely return to sport or daily function.

Achilles tendinopathy is a common musculoskeletal condition for which loading programs are currently the standard of care. However, the treatment protocols vary. We therefore propose a protocol for Achilles tendinopathy treatment using extracorporeal shockwave therapy.

A Platelet-Rich Plasma Injection into the Sectioned Achilles Tendon of a Rat

This video demonstrates a technique for injecting platelet-rich plasma (PRP) into the sectioned Achilles tendon of rats. A small segment is excised from the Achilles tendon of a recipient rat, the site is sutured, and the rat is allowed to recover. Concurrently, whole blood is collected from a donor rat and centrifuged to obtain PRP, which is then activated and injected into the sutured site of the recipient rat to induce tendon repair.

Ultrasound Tissue Characterization of Human Achilles Tendon by Stability Quantification of Echo Patterns

Ultrasound is the approach most commonly adopted in the clinical setting for the assessment of the size and structure of the Achilles tendon. To expand the Achilles tendon assessment in a more comprehensive manner, the ultrasound tissue characterization (UTC) approach has recently been proposed and validated in clinical studies.

Here, we present a protocol to utilize [68Ga]-NOTAFAP-2286 PET/CT imaging to exhibit high sensitivity in detecting and precisely localizing tendon injuries.

Effects of Allogeneic Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) on the Healing Process of Sectioned Achilles Tendons of Rats: A Methodological Description

This protocol describes the evaluation process of healing tendons in rats that have been injected with allogeneic platelet rich plasma (PRP) or saline solution after removing part of the Achilles tendon. The progress of tendon healing is evaluated at several time points using different types of analyses.
