Carotid Artery Model

Carotid artery model is a physical or digital representation of the carotid arteries, major blood vessels that supply the brain and illustrate vascular anatomy in medicine. It reproduces features such as vessel branching, lumen shape, and wall structure, allowing users to relate anatomical form to blood flow and conditions that alter circulation. In teaching and research, carotid artery models support anatomy training, interpretation of vascular imaging, and discussion of disorders such as atherosclerosis and stenosis. By making complex anatomy easier to visualize, these models can strengthen clinical communication and provide a foundation for evaluating interventions and developing realistic simulations.

2013

A model of stent implantation in mouse carotid artery is described. Compared to other similar methods, this procedure is very rapid, simple and accessible, offering the possibility to study in a convenient way the vascular wall reaction to different drug-eluting stents and the molecular mechanisms of restenosis.

Passive mechanical testing of mouse carotid arteries is described, with special consideration for adapting to different specimen ages. The procedures include determining the in vivo length of the artery, mounting it in a pressure myograph, recording data, measuring the unloaded dimensions and analyzing the resulting data.

Modeling Brain Tumor Metastasis via Internal Carotid Artery Injection of Cancer Cells

Source: Lim, M., et al. Modeling Brain Metastasis by Internal Carotid Artery Injection of Cancer Cells. J. Vis. Exp. (2022)In this video, an anesthetized mouse undergoes a surgical procedure in which cancer cells are injected into the common carotid artery (CCA) to facilitate targeted delivery to the brain. The procedure involves precise suturing and manipulation of the carotid arteries to direct the injected cells toward the internal carotid artery (ICA), promoting tumor formation in the brain...
