Caudate Lobectomy

Caudate lobectomy is a liver operation that removes the caudate lobe, a distinct segment located on the posterior surface of the liver near the inferior vena cava and major hepatic veins. The procedure requires careful dissection of short hepatic veins and caudate branches of the portal vein and hepatic artery, followed by division of the bile ducts and parenchyma while preserving adequate liver inflow, outflow, and functional tissue. Surgeons use caudate lobectomy to treat selected primary or metastatic liver tumors, often alongside resection of adjacent segments. Understanding this complex anatomy supports safer surgical planning and reduces risks such as bleeding, bile leakage, and postoperative liver failure.
