Contact Inhibition Loss

Contact inhibition loss is the failure of cells to stop dividing or migrating when they become crowded, a change that can disrupt tissue organization and contribute to disease. In healthy epithelia, cell-cell adhesion and density-sensitive signaling, including pathways that regulate cytoskeletal tension and growth-control factors, restrain proliferation; when these controls weaken, cells may continue cycling, move into neighboring spaces, and form disordered layers. In medicine, studying contact inhibition loss helps researchers distinguish normal from transformed cells, investigate tumor initiation and invasion, and evaluate how genetic or molecular changes alter tissue growth, supporting cancer research and therapeutic development.

Piping Networks and Pressure Losses

2023

Source: Alexander S Rattner, Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA This experiment introduces the measurement and modeling of pressure losses in piping networks and internal flow systems. In such systems, frictional flow resistance from channel walls, fittings, and obstructions causes mechanical energy in the form of fluid pressure to be converted to heat. Engineering analyses are needed to size flow hardware to ensure...

Line Loss

The different configurations of source-load connections include wye (star) and delta connections. The relationship between line and phase voltages and currents varies depending on the configuration. When the source is supplying power, it is transmitted through the wires to the load, and during this transmission, some power is absorbed by the wires, leading to line loss. Line loss impacts power delivery efficiency in a balanced three-phase circuit. The symmetry in such a circuit simplifies the...

Feedback Inhibition

Biochemical reactions are occurring constantly in cells, converting starting substances to different products, usually with the help of enzymes that speed the reactions. Without enzymes, it would take far too long for most reactions to occur to be useful to the cell! Since enzymes help control the rate of reactions, their activity is regulated so that appropriate amounts of starting materials, intermediate metabolites, and products are maintained in the cell. Excessive build-up or depletion of...

Reducing Line Loss

2024

In a three-phase circuit, line loss is an indicator of energy dissipated as heat due to the resistance of transmission lines. To address this, incorporating transformers into the system—a step-up transformer at the source and a step-down transformer at the load—is a strategic solution. Two three-phase transformers are introduced to improve this. With a step-up transformer at the source, the voltage is increased, thereby reducing the current in the transmission lines since power loss in...

Intercellular Communication in a Contact-Free Co-Culture of Neurons and Oligodendrocytes

Begin with a contact-free co-culture of neurons and oligodendrocytes.A permeable membrane separates the neurons in the transwell insert from the oligodendrocytes at the bottom well.Add potassium to the insert to raise extracellular potassium levels, which inhibits the efflux of intracellular potassium. The potassium accumulation depolarizes the neurons, triggering the opening of voltage-gated calcium channels and allowing calcium influx. The influx stimulates the release of excitatory...
