Heller Myotomy

Heller myotomy is a surgical procedure that treats achalasia by dividing the muscle fibers of the lower esophageal sphincter, helping swallowed food and liquid enter the stomach. During the operation, surgeons cut the circular muscle layer at the gastroesophageal junction while preserving the inner lining; the weakened sphincter can then release functional obstruction. Usually performed laparoscopically and often combined with a partial fundoplication to limit postoperative reflux, the procedure can relieve dysphagia, regurgitation, and chest discomfort. It is an important treatment for esophageal motility disorders and provides a durable alternative to endoscopic or pneumatic approaches.

Microglia are the resident immune cells of the central nervous system (CNS) with a high capacity to phagocytose or engulf material in their extracellular environment. Here, a broadly applicable, reliable, and highly quantitative assay for visualizing and measuring microglia-mediated engulfment of synaptic components is described.
