Microvascular Surgery Training

Microvascular surgery training is the structured development of skills needed to operate on small blood vessels and nerves, often only a few millimeters in diameter, using magnification and specialized instruments. Trainees learn precise tissue handling, vessel preparation, and microsuture techniques while practicing anastomosis, the joining of vessel ends to restore blood flow, under an operating microscope or surgical loupe. This training supports reconstructive surgery, replantation, transplant procedures, and selected neurosurgical and vascular interventions. By improving dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and an understanding of blood-flow principles, simulation and laboratory practice help surgeons achieve reliable outcomes before performing complex procedures in patients.

There are many available options for management of the patient with trigeminal neuralgia. Microvascular decompression, while the most invasive of all options, is also the most effective at achieving long term remission of symptoms. Video instruction on how to maximize efficacy and minimize complications with this procedure is described.

Here, we describe a methodology to deliver human cord blood-derived endothelial colony-forming cells (ECFCs) and bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), embedded in a collagen/fibronectin gel, subcutaneously into immunodeficient mice. This cell/gel combination generates a human vascular network that connects with the mouse vasculature.

2026

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. A Stepwise Approach to Training Proper training and competency in animal procedures are essential to ensure high standards of animal welfare and reliable scientific outcomes. A structured, progressive training approach is...

Isolation of Murine Adipose Tissue-derived Microvascular Fragments as Vascularization Units for Tissue Engineering

2017

We present a protocol to isolate adipose tissue-derived microvascular fragments that represent promising vascularization units. They can be rapidly isolated, do not require in vitro processing and, thus, may be used for one-step prevascularization in different fields of tissue engineering.
