Post-surgical Habituation

Post-surgical habituation is the gradual reduction in a patient’s response to recurring, non-threatening sensations or stimuli after an operation, helping the nervous system adjust during recovery. Through repeated, controlled exposure to sensations such as movement, touch, pressure, or therapeutic exercise, neural processing becomes less reactive when the stimulus does not signal tissue damage, reducing protective responses and discomfort over time. In medicine, this concept can inform pain management, rehabilitation planning, and patient education, particularly when normal postoperative sensations interfere with movement or daily activities. Recognizing habituation helps clinicians distinguish expected adaptation from symptoms that require further evaluation.

Habituation: Studying Infants Before They Can Talk

2023

Source: Laboratories of Nicholaus Noles, Judith Danovitch, and Cara Cashon—University of Louisville Infants are one of the purest sources of information about human thinking and learning, because they’ve had very few life experiences. Thus, researchers are interested in gathering data from infants, but as participants in experimental research, they are a challenging group to study. Unlike older children and adults, young infants are unable to reliably speak, understand speech, or even move and...

This manuscript describes a protocol to examine the olfactory system of rodents. The olfactory habituation/dishabituation test will allow investigators to determine whether a mouse habituates to a repeatedly presented odor and whether the mouse demonstrates dishabituation when presented a novel odor.

Habituation and Positive Reinforcement for Rodent Handling

2026

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Habituation and positive reinforcement are refinement strategies that help reduce stress during routine handling and experimental procedures in rodents. These approaches improve animal welfare, encourage voluntary cooperation,...

Habituation and Prepulse Inhibition of Acoustic Startle in Rodents

Habituation and prepulse inhibition of startle are operational measures of sensory gating. Sensory gating is disrupted in schizophrenia, and some other mental disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. We here describe a standard protocol to assess short-term and long-term habituation as well as prepulse inhibition of acoustic startle responses in rats and mice.
