Pulse Wave Doppler

Pulse wave Doppler is an ultrasound method that measures the velocity and direction of moving blood at a selected depth, making it important for noninvasive cardiovascular assessment. A transducer sends brief sound pulses and analyzes returning echoes from a defined sample volume; Doppler frequency shifts are converted into velocity over time, while pulse-repetition frequency controls the measurable velocity range and helps determine when aliasing occurs. In medicine, this technique supports echocardiography and vascular imaging by characterizing blood-flow patterns, estimating pressure gradients, and identifying abnormalities such as stenosis or impaired valve function. Its depth-resolved measurements help clinicians evaluate circulation and guide diagnosis.

Sound Waves and Doppler Shift

Source: Arianna Brown, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA Waves are disturbances that propagate through a material medium or empty space. Light waves can travel through a vacuum and some forms of matter, and are transverse in nature, which means that the oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of propagation. However, sound waves are pressure waves that travel through an elastic medium like air,...

Peripheral Vascular Exam Using a Continuous Wave Doppler

Source: Joseph Donroe, MD, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT Peripheral vascular disease (PVD) is a common condition affecting older adults and includes disease of the peripheral arteries and veins. While the history and physical exam offer clues to its diagnosis, Doppler ultrasound has become a routine part of the bedside vascular examination. The video titled "The Peripheral Vascular Exam" gave a detailed review of the physical examination of the...

Ultrasound-based Pulse Wave Velocity Evaluation in Mice

Arterial stiffness represents a key factor in cardiovascular disease and pulse wave velocity (PWV) can be considered as a surrogate index for arterial stiffness. This protocol describes an image processing algorithm for calculating PWV in mice based on ultrasound image processing that is applicable at different arterial sites.

Standing Waves

Source: Arianna Brown, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA Standing waves, or stationary waves, are waves that appear not to propagate and are produced by the interference of two waves traveling in opposite directions with the same frequency and amplitude. These waves appear to vibrate up and down with no linear movement and are most easily identified in vibrating finite media like a plucked guitar string,...
