Regional Anesthesia Simulation

Regional anesthesia simulation is a structured educational method that recreates nerve-block procedures in a controlled setting, allowing clinicians to build competence before treating patients. Using anatomical models, task trainers, or other simulated environments, learners practice identifying relevant anatomy, guiding a needle, delivering a regional anesthetic, and responding to procedural challenges while instructors provide feedback and assess performance. This approach supports deliberate practice, strengthens technical and communication skills, and standardizes training across medical programs. It also provides a safer way to evaluate competence and prepare clinicians for ultrasound-guided or landmark-based techniques when these are included in the curriculum.

Local Anesthetics: Clinical Application as Intravenous Regional Anesthesia

2023

Intravenous regional anesthesia or the Bier block technique is used to anesthetize a specific limb or extremity. It uses exsanguinated or blood-drained vessels to transport local anesthetics or LAs to the peripheral nerve trunks. Lidocaine without vasoconstrictors like epinephrine is most commonly used for this technique. Other drugs used are prilocaine, ropivacaine, and chloroprocaine. Bupivacaine is not recommended for this technique due to its high cardiac toxicity. One of the advantages of...

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Anesthesia is an essential component of rabbit surgical and experimental procedures because it prevents pain, reduces stress responses, and helps immobilize the animal during handling and manipulation when general anesthesia is...

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals ("The Guide") states that pain assessment and alleviation are integral components of the veterinary care of laboratory animals. The definition of anesthesia is the loss of feeling or sensation. It is a dynamic event involving changes in anesthetic depth with respect to an animal's metabolism, surgical stimulation, or variations in the...

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Pigs are commonly used in biomedical and surgical research because of their anatomical and physiological similarities to humans. During procedures, anesthesia prevents pain, reduces stress, limits movement, and supports animal...

General Anesthesia: Overview

2024

Anesthesia is a medical procedure that uses drugs for CNS suppression to enable painless surgeries and procedures. The selection of anesthetics is influenced by their pharmacokinetic properties, side effects, and patient characteristics. Various types of anesthesia include general, local, regional, spinal, and inhalational. General anesthesia induces unconsciousness in the whole body, while the others target specific areas or sensations. It is administered to minimize adverse effects, maintain...
