Surgical Needle Tract

A surgical needle tract is the pathway created as a needle passes through skin and underlying tissues during a medical procedure. Its course depends on the needle’s entry point, angle, depth, and interaction with tissue layers, and it may provide access for biopsy, fluid aspiration, injection, localization, or placement of a device. Understanding the tract helps clinicians plan safe access, target the intended anatomy, and assess possible effects such as tissue disruption, bleeding, or contamination. In medicine and surgery, documenting and managing the needle tract supports accurate sampling, effective treatment, and safer postoperative care.
