Ultrasound A Scan

Ultrasound A-scan, or amplitude-mode ultrasonography, is a one-dimensional imaging technique that measures distances within the eye by recording echoes from internal ocular structures. A probe sends high-frequency sound waves through the eye, and the returning echoes appear as spikes whose timing and amplitude correspond to tissue boundaries; sound velocity and measured travel time allow calculation of ocular dimensions, especially axial length. In medicine, ophthalmologists use A-scan biometry to assess eye anatomy and calculate intraocular lens power before cataract surgery. The method supports accurate surgical planning and remains valuable when optical measurements are limited by dense cataracts or other media opacities.

Source: Amelia R. Adelsperger, Evan H. Phillips, and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana High-frequency ultrasound systems are used to acquire high resolution images. Here, the use of a state-of-the-art system will be demonstrated to image the morphology and hemodynamics of small pulsatile arteries and veins found in mice and rats. Ultrasound is a relatively inexpensive, portable, and versatile method for the noninvasive...

We describe a new ultrasound-based vector tissue Doppler imaging technique to measure muscle contraction velocity, strain and strain rate with sub-millisecond temporal resolution during dynamic activities. This approach provides complementary measurements of dynamic muscle function and could lead to a better understanding of mechanisms underlying musculoskeletal disorders.

Transabdominal Ultrasound for Pregnancy Diagnosis in Reeves' Muntjac Deer

2014

Transabdominal ultrasound is described as an effective, noninvasive means for assessing reproductive status in Reeves' muntjac deer. These methods can be used to achieve early pregnancy diagnosis and to evaluate fetal viability. Future applications of this technique include estimation of gestational age and effects of maternal disease on fetal development.

During most eukaryotic translation processes, the small 40S ribosome subunit scans an mRNA from its 5' end until it encounters the first start AUG codon. The large 60S ribosomal subunit then joins the smaller one to initiate protein synthesis. The location of the translation initiation is largely determined by the nucleotides near the start codon as there may be multiple translation initiation sites present on the mRNA. Marilyn Kozak discovered that the sequence RCCAUGG (where R stands for...
